Obama Wins Presidency!!! (or at least Seminole Heights straw poll)

The votes are in. After our weeklong straw poll, the votes have been counted.

Obama = 67%
McCain = 8%
Ron Paul = 8%
Undecided = 17%

If you factor in the two votes for Hillary, the numbers would change slightly. Now, we will compare these numbers to Novembers numbers and see how the “Seminole Heights Predictor Poll” holds up.

Creative Loafing Picks up story from our blog.

Interestingly enough, Creative Loafing says “the blog bought Whaley’s website address and is promising free advertising on the website.” This part is inaccurate and should have been that New Heights had purchased the website and promised advertising in the magazine. Since New Heights and the blog had began the campaign, the media has been confused.

Seminole Heights Rallies to Save Whaley’s Market

August 11th, 2008 by Alex Pickett in Blogroll, Urban Explorations
I’m sure you’ve read the sad accounts of Whaley’s Market closing in South Tampa. (Our own CL music critic Wade Tatangelo even devoted a Top 10 to them). But one neighborhood is not content to wallow in pity over the independent grocery store’s demise.

Residents of Seminole Heights are begging Whaley’s to relocate to their side of town. Seminole Heights doesn’t have a neighborhood market it’s something they’ve wanted for years. So, the Official Unofficial Seminole Heights blog bought Whalley’s website address and is promising free advertising on its website. They’ve also put a call out to other residents and blogs to spread the word.

Check out the call to action here.

Seminole Heights must have the Most Beautiful People in the City.

Have you ever noticed how many beauty salons, we have in Seminole Heights and immediate surrounding areas? I would almost bet, that within a one mile radius from Hillsborough and 275, you will find over 20 beauty shops and beauty supply stores. How can this many salons and stores make it. In the Ross Shopping center alone, I believe there are 3 or 4. Are people driving in to the neighborhood for these services or are this supported by our neighbors?

Brick Paver Business on Hillsborough Closed.

Was driving east on Hillsborough and noticed that the Brick Paver Store (I think it was Octopus Pavers) is now out of business and for sale. While I hate to see needed businesses go out of business, this one was a disappointment from the start. I remember when they first announced they were relocating to the neighborhood. They started remodeling the old “Mexican Restaurant looking” store front that was vacant for years, then a credit union, then an urban apparel store. They took off the fake facade so we all began to get excited, then they started butchering the windows and painting God awful colors. The property was never kept up. I am assuming that business never took off. This building has potential and hopefully will soon see a new, needed tenant.
