2008…A Year in Review!

As another year comes to a close, it’s time to review what made the biggest news in 2008 for our neighborhood. While the year seemed to fly by at warp speed, many historical and changing events occurred for our nation and our neighborhood. Nationally, the election of 2008 will reshape our nation’s future, locally; our 2008 election will be long remembered. Neighbors spoke out and their voice reflected a want for change. For those neighbors living along the
Nebraska Ave
corridor, the long awaited repaving and re-striping finally became reality. 2008 also saw more commercial redevelopment throughout all of our neighborhoods. From the many bars and restaurants, neighbors now have a choice when dining out and entertainment. While we did gain many new dining places, we did also lose a valued friend and restaurant Merino’s. We hold out hope that he will return. Neighbors continued to make the trek down to City Hall to show support for neighborhood friendly businesses.  For a while, the entire city and neighborhood sat, watched and waited as Seminole Heights neighbors waited for the word… Would Seminole Height lure Whaley’s back to our area. While the timing did not play in our favor, we have high hopes that our time will come. Neighbors, tired of prostitution, stood up again and screamed for change. As a result, their efforts prompted changes within TPD. We were able to enjoy an award winning movie where Seminole Heights was the star! We have celebrated many new neighbors moving into our neighborhood while the economic climate has made our centralized living much more appealing and lowered prices to more enticing level. At the same time, we are sad to lose many of our friends as their situations cause them to move on as well. Finally, we saw the creation of the Official, Unofficial Blog. Since July 1st, we have been fortunate to continue to cover the Seminole Heights
news. For your continued comments, visits and words of encouragement, we thank each and every one of you. We are hoping for a great 2009 and look forward to sharing and discussing more news with you!

While it is impossible to list an entire year worth of memories in one single posts, I have tried to highlight many of the events that have stood out in my mind. Knowing I have missed many things, I welcome you to leave your comments to add to this list.

This was a very good year. I am looking forward to 2009. We are thankful for you taking all of the time to build this site. Since you started it is now the only site left to read. From time to time I check the others but they have pretty much stopped functioning. I know they are a huge time consuming burden but you have done a tremendous job.

The past year also enlightened and empowered others towards a desire to have representation in a neighborhood assoc of their own.
For whatever reasons (agreed or not) the concerns and issues others have with forming or breaking away was a new and changing event in the huge area we call Seminole Heights. Happy New Year to all and good luck to everyone in surviving this next difficult economic one.

On a sad note we lost all the neighborhood blogs. We are now down to two. I guess this is what they mean when they say only the strong survive. I frequent both of them, yours and the forum at oldseminoleheights.com. Still like the frequency here. Good luck in 09. Thanks for entertaining us, Susan

The other blogs are still functioning. They just don’t update very frequently. If you check them about once a month, you will stay up to date. The blogs are a huge amount of work so most have gotten tired of writing them. This blog is very unusual as they continue to find something day after day. I suppose at some point they too will get tired and not be as frequent. I don’t understand how David’s blog stopped publishing as he gave access to almost everyone in the neighborhood. It has a gazillion authors. You would think there would be enough people to share the workload.

David’s Blog stopped allowing me as a listed contributor to log on. That’s been a big part of the problem with the old “Seminole Heights” blog. I wrote several times to him and the host to no avail. Perhaps this is true of the others.

I had heard rumors that David had given the blog to Rick. I figured Rick was fazing it out for his other site. Either way, I prefer this one.

For the record. David did not give his site to me or turn it over to me. Nix the rumors. As one of the writers that can post on the site I sometimes do. As to why others have stopped contributing, there are several I know have forgotten their access codes.

I have generally made a distinction between what I put there and what I put on my personal site just as I make a distinction between what I put on my personal site and my real estate related site.

This site is more general and broadly focused and has done a good job serving a community need just as David’s once did. Hopefully it will continue to serve that roll.

Thanks for responding Rick. I think any time you have a blog that post so infrequent as these, you lose the traffic and readers. I think this site found success by posting something new every single day. While I don’t comment too often, I do come to the site at least 2 or 3 times a day to read the post and more importantly read the comments. This is the first site that seems to be unbiased in their opinion. It is more of a toss out of information. They toss it out for us to ponder and discuss. The other sites can be so opinionated that if you don’t agree with them you don’t dare leave a comment. I agree with you Rick. This site is doing a great job for our community.
