Are Snipe Signs Blight and Litter or Should They be Allowed?

This came from the SESH email group. Snipe signs have always been illegal. However, the city has done very little to enforce the ordinance. What are your thoughts on the issue? Should we ignore or enforce? How could the city enforce? Read On:

To All:

We have all seen the increase in the use of ILLEGAL snipe signs in our neighborhood and throughout the entire city.  Just in case you don’t know, SNIPE signs are those cardboard or plastic signs that we see along the street, roads and at intersections advertising everything from HOUSE FOR RENT or WE PAY CASH FOR HOUSES, etc.  They are usually held up by a metal frame.  The only snipe signs that are permitted are those used by realtors to advertise for OPEN HOUSES, political signs, yard/garage sales, etc.  And even those have very strict, and temporary uses.

Not only are these signs an eye sore and obstruct the right-of-way but also the use of these snipe signs is ILLEGAL in the state of Florida via Florida Statute  479.015.  Unfortunately for us, police and code resources have to be used for more serious infractions of the law.

I just want people to know that the placement of these signs anywhere within our neighborhood is a total waste of time and of money because no sooner as they go up I (and I assume others) pull them up and put them directly in the garbage.  I would also possibly like to start collecting them for the association to use for events such as the Home Tour, Ice Cream Social, Membership Meetings, etc.

Please feel free to express your opinions and/or ideas regarding this (and other) issues.  The neighborhood is experiencing the downturn in the housing market with many, many foreclosed and abandoned properties and we should all work together as much as possible to reverse this trend.

Remember Morning Glory?

ST. PETERSBURG, FL –The State of Florida has issued an emergency order against the Morning Glory Funeral Home after receiving complaints that bodies were not presented properly. The order prevents the funeral home from providing embalming and refrigeration services.

Two families complained to the state about funeral services performed by the funeral home last year. The families say they saw fly larvae and maggots on the bodies of their deceased loved ones.

They also say a foul odor emanated from the bodies during funerals.

“Funeral homes should be comforting and reassuring to families, not adding to their suffering. Instead, we have received complaints that are extremely disturbing,” said Florida Chief Financial Officer, Alex Sink.

The Morning Glory Funeral Home is located at 3301 5th Avenue in St. Petersburg.

Tampa police plan to battle Super Bowl week prostitution problem

TAMPA, FL — Ads on the internet are one way Tampa police say they found out about numerous prostitutes coming to town during Super Bowl XLIII. “The reason we know that is we see a gigantic uptick in internet activity,” Tampa Police Chief Bret Bartlett said. “The ladies post the fact that they’re coming into town.”

Thirteen people were arrested Monday after Tampa police went undercover in West Tampa on a reverse prostitution ring. An undercover female officer posed as a prostitute, while men who asked to buy sex were handcuffed and taken away.

Police say they know a few parts of town are known as prostitution areas: some of Dale Mabry, Drew Park, and part of Nebraska Avenue. But, because some prostitutes are telling customers they’re going to Tampa during Super Bowl week, police say they’ll be looking beyond the usual spots to make arrests.

Capt. Bartlett wants to lower prostitution problems in Tampa, but says police will be watching over the entire city to make sure everyone feels safe. “No matter who you are, whether you’re a fan, anybody else, you get caught breaking the laws of this city, of this state, you’re going to take a trip across town and you may miss the game because of all this stuff.”
