Seminole Heights Group Seeks Friends Of Library, Bookstore
SEMINOLE HEIGHTS - A replacement library for the Seminole Heights Public Branch Library is slated for future construction. In the final design, residents are hoping there will be room for a special addition — a bookstore. To qualify for a bookstore, library officials say the Seminole Heights library, 4711 N. Central Ave., must have a Friends of the Library group. The Southeast Seminole Heights Civic Association is spearheading an effort to form a Friends group within the next few months. “We’re just in the initial stages,” said association president Sherry Genovar-Simons, who spoke at a recent general membership meeting. Library officials want to replace the existing 6,000-square-foot library with a two-story building and parking deck. Negotiations are under way with the Hillsborough County school district for use of a parking lot adjacent to the library. School officials have said they don’t want to sell the parking lot but would consider sharing it. Library officials said a construction date will be determined after approval of the county’s 2010 fiscal budget. For the past 15 years, an annual book sale named in memory of library booster and historian Steve Gluckman has been the primary funding source for several summer youth library programs. Gluckman died two years ago from a heart attack at age 70. A March book sale collected more than $1,600. The hope is that a bookstore, selling used items, would be another revenue source. Association member Pat Benjamin is heading up the friends of the library effort. The Old Seminole Heights Neighborhood Association and South Seminole Heights Civic Association are being asked to join the project. The first step is forming a steering committee, said Margaret Rials, friends of the library coordinator. Friends of the Library of Tampa-Hillsborough County Inc., a nonprofit group, oversees 14 friends of the library groups in the county. The groups support 16 of 25 county libraries. “It’s their grass-roots support group,” Rials said. “It means a lot to the community and the library.” The steering committee needs to meet, write bylaws and elect officers. Information is then submitted to the umbrella organization for approval. Rials estimates it would take six months or less. “Then they are ready to go,” she said. “It’s really a simple process.” For information, call Benjamin at (813) 234-2449. Reporter Kathy Steele can be reached at (813) 259-7652.

Noticed who is heading up this program? So they are on the foundation, library, what else? Keep biting and chewing! Is it lack of volunteers or desire to micromanage that cause our association leaders to have their hands in every single project. Many of you may not like our new board but I appreciate the fact that they don’t have to control every minute detail. Why not let people use their talents and expertise to head up committees and projects without having to waste resources and constantly be involved.
Micromanage, then interfere, have secret meetings, then take credit for accomplishments of others.
#1 - if you read the article closely, Sherry Simons was quoted while informing her membership during a general meeting in her role as President of SESHCA. The article then clearly states that the person “heading up this program” is Pat Benjamin. That sounds like a new name to me.
Well,if you can’t find anything positive then misquote the article I say!!
You know, copying and pasting entire articles from the newspaper is copyright violation. Do you really think it’s appropriate to steal someone else’s work?
It’s one thing to quote and then include a link where you drive people to see the ads the Trib has placed on their site. It’s a completely dishonorable thing to simply copy and paste.
Show some damn respect and courtesy. Or, at least obey copyright law.
Number 5 you love starting crap don’t you. If you would read instead of going straight for the kill, you would notice that the article has the link. Open your eyes before you open your mouth jackass!
#1, get your head out of your ass. If it weren’t for the officers of the greater SH neighborhoods initiating projects, who would — the majority of apathetic residents who do little more than complain about what the neighborhood leaders are NOT doing? Here’s a thought - call Ms. Benjamin and VOLUNTEER your time. Because, after all, that is why most projects become managed by the same people, due to LACK of volunteers. Here is an opportunity for some fresh “blood”. My bet is that the same people will end up doing it because no one else steps up.
, #6 - Please re-read. The point is not about providing a link. The point is about the wholesale copying and pasting of other people’s work, which is theft.
So, point about opening eyes before mouth - right back atcha.
“Except as otherwise expressly provided in these terms and conditions, you may not copy, distribute, transmit, display, perform, reproduce, publish, license, modify, rewrite, create derivative works from, transfer, or sell any material contained on the Web site without the prior consent of the copyright owner.”
Again, an excerpt may drive traffic to the source, thereby exposing people to the ads, which pays the reporters salary. Copying wholesale is theft and against the law.
Just sayin’.
Get a life Shawn.
Number 8, I think you may want to re-read. Your original comment clearly accused the blog of not putting links in the articles “t’s one thing to quote and then include a link where you drive people to see the ads the Trib has placed on their site. It’s a completely dishonorable thing to simply copy and paste.” In today’s times, I am sure the Trib is greatful for the added traffic. Blogger, if you decide to not cut and paste articles, I would also pull the plug on driving traffic to any website. It’s not like the articles you cite can’t be found on 50 websites. I think Shawn is causing a stink since your site is kicking his sites ass in traffic. Most of us do not subscribe to the paper so your links have kept us informed and keeps the papers web traffic up. If you decide not to copy, I would suggest saying “I read an article in A paper” They would be foolish to give up that traffic. Just sayin’
Gail.
Gail. This is not Shawn.
If you quote the ENTIRE article there is no reason for someone to go to the Trib, so no traffic is being driven to them.
1) copying and pasting whole articles without permission is illegal, 2) why not HELP your local newspaper instead of hurt them? 3) respect intellectual property rights
When the Trib goes out of business who will do the research that their reporters do?
It seems neighborly to help out the local newspaper, instead of, you know, stealing from them.
Great, Not-Shawn. None of these posts are Gail’s either.
However, I tend to agree with # 10 towards whoever it is that this person needs to get a life. Whatever…..get over it already.
this blog looks great,i hope i can read your article very soon.
