Publix Update

Over the weekend, I was shopping at our neighborhood Publix. Normally, I can do my shopping with my eyes closed. However, this weekend, I was constantly stopping for directions. Especially when it came to bread. Today, I recieved this email:

______________

A quick update to let you know what is going on at your neighborhood Publix and why you can’t find the bread anymore. We are finally going to have a real Greenwise/organic section. The area where the bread has been is going to become a Greenwise section, which meant things had to move. Some of the benefits of this, besides the Greenwise is more space on bottled water, more space on Arizona Tea/Snapple. Bringing a Hard Bread(Melba Toast, Bread sticks, etc.) section into the store. Not hiding the Peanut Butter section anymore.

So a quick breakdown of where everything is:

  • Bread and Peanut Butter/Jelly is on the Dairy aisle #8.
  • Peanuts and popcorn are now next to the sodas, aisle #6.
  • Picnic supplies are next to the tuna fish, aisle #3 .
  •  Bug spray is on the detergent aisle, aisle #7.

I know we don’t like change, but I believe this will result in long term positives for your shopping experience. Please do not hesitate to contact me at 238-7720 if you have any questions/comments on these moves. After a couple of weeks, you won’t even remember you had to go looking for them and you will be happy you don’t have to shop somewhere else for your organic pasta, soups, cookies, etc.
Thanks for shopping with me and for helping me make the store better everyday. I really do listen and try to make you happy that we are your neighborhood store.

Arrests Made in SH Publix Robbery! (IT WAS AN EMPLOYEE!)

While it does not make the crime any better, we can rest a bit easier knowing that this was not some random robbery. This is great TPD work to solve the case so quickly.

TAMPA — A 19-year-old Tampa man was arrested early this morning in conjunction with the armed robbery of a Nebraska Avenue Publix last week.

Police said Terrell D. Limehouse, of 811 E Louisiana (pictured), who works at the Publix at 6001 N Nebraska Ave., was seated on the counter of the service desk when two masked men took more than $2,000 from an office at the grocery about 10 p.m. Based on phone calls, text messages and a video of the robbery, police said Limehouse helped plan the heist.

Limehouse was charged with armed robbery and taken to the Hillsborough County Jail, where he remains without bail.

Tampa Publix Robbed at Gunpoint

From the St. Petersburg Times

TAMPA — Police are searching for two men who robbed a Tampa grocery store at gunpoint Thursday night.

At about 10 p.m., the two men entered the Publix at 6001 N Nebraska Ave., through a back door, according to the Tampa Police Department. Armed with handguns, the men ordered employees to lie on the ground while they made the store’s assistant manager and cashier give them an undetermined amount of money from the store’s safe. They then fled in a dark-colored SUV, police said. There were no injuries.

One man is described as black, 5-foot-9 to 6 feet tall, about 170 pounds, wearing a black T-shirt and dark blue jeans. Police said the other is also black, 5-foot-9 to 6 feet tall, about 230 to 250 pounds, wearing a black T-shirt and acid-washed jeans.

Seminole Heights on the Big Screen!

This came from an email:  (I did not know this. I remember how “cute” the old Publix used to be. I now have to rent the movie to see some neighborhood history. If you have lots of time, you can rent the original from 1961, then follow up with this one, Parent Trap II from 1986)
_______________________

The old movie The Parent Trap II was filmed in Tampa and one of the grocery stores they go to in the movie is the Nebraska Publix before it was remolded. Neat.

Are You Ready to Go Green?

FROM THE OLDSEMINOLEHEIGHTS.COM DISCUSSION FORUM.

Today I emailed our lovely neighborhood Publix to suggest that they more actively promote their green cloth Publix shopping bags. I use them each time I shop. I’m sure that more people would begin to use these instead of accepting plastic bags if they thought about the ecological and economic impact. I’m posting my email to Publix below, hoping that some of you might also encourage them in this direction. Thanks! See below:

Hi,
Publix #0511 is an excellent store. It’s attractive and the employees are friendly and efficient. I have a suggestion that I think would go over well in our eco-friendly neighborhood: Actively promote, from an ecological and OIL SAVING standpoint, the green cloth Publix shopping bags by offering a free bag to customers who spend a given amount per trip. For example, give away one free bag for every $75 spent. Many countries in Europe stopped supplying customers with wasteful plastic bags years ago, instead requiring shoppers to supply their own bags! When are we going to catch up? As one web site says: We use 380 billion plastic bags a year, costing us 1.6 billions gallons of oil a year, then we throw them away.

Publix could get some fantastic press by running with this idea! Think about it!

Thanks for your continuing excellent service.

Shop Seminole Heights. Who’s Cheaper?

Last night, on my way home, I had to stop by Sweetbay Supermarkets to pick up a few items. Out of the all the grocers, I find that Sweetbay has the freshest produce and the biggest selection. However, I was not so fortunate with the other items on the list. So, I put back the few items I had and headed to Publix. As I completed my list at Publix I noticed the difference in price for the few items I was purchasing. Some as much as two dollars. Have you experienced such drastic prices? Which do you find to be cheaper?

Over the next week, I am going to visit the neighborhood grocers to compare prices for normally, daily items:

one gallon milk
bread
cheese
butter
peanut butter
bag of chips
tomatoes
lettuce
12 pack of beer
bottle of wine
dog food

Anything else you feel should be added to the grocery list?

Should Our Corporate Giant Neighbors be Held by the Same Standards?

Driving throughout Seminole Heights , you will find that many large, national Corporations have offices and locations within our boundaries. For example: Verizon, Circle K, Publix, Dollar General, Family Dollar, Discount Auto, Sweetbay Supermarkets, Walgreens, Starbucks (and I am sure I am missing some.) This does not include the large corporations that are franchised own: Mobile , Texaco, Vallero, etc.

As you look at many of these large, for profit corporations, you can’t help but notice the poorly kept properties. Since Verizon has been in our neighborhood, very little has been done to improve their property. Even though it is on one of our major intersection. Jumping to the next major intersection, you have Advance Auto which has had many problems keeping up with their property. With oil bottles strewn about, I think they have finally given up.

For the most part, most larger businesses do their part to improve our neighborhood. However, all it takes is one or two to destroy years worth of effort and hard work.

Do you think their corporate offices are aware of the conditions of their properties? Do you think they care? Does the city’s code office cite them by the same rules residential and smaller companies are held? What’s your thoughts?
